I'm writing this review because the Oru has provided me with something awesome: the ability to own and store my own kayak living in a one bedroom apartment in Downtown Seattle. Unlike inflatables (which, prior to Oru, were about the only thing I could have as an apartment dweller), the Oru is sturdy, responsive, and handles the chop of the water very well. Even though the cockpit can be deemed as as tight fit, it is very important to also know that in no way does it feel uncomfortable thanks to its high back seat. I was crazy about this good kayak, but, my wife was very against it. Only complaint is the number of times I was stopped to answer questions about the kayak. Perhaps 20% of the time, my paddling is just for fun and exploration. The chines are cut nicely to allow sleek tracking, and the lightweight kayak gets an advantage on speed. As a low-riding, narrow boat, it's easy to get in and out of with good stability. I see why the came up with the Beach model! The Oru is definitely a step above that. It's not enough boat for anything other than very flat conditions. As a smaller dude I'm afraid I cannot roll it. And guess what? And customer service is great. I will be adding them to the bottom here, just in case wants to view some fun ones before making up their minds. All things considered this is a good product and even though I've been a bit unlucky with my model I highly recommend it. If capsized, I doubt I could reenter the Bay. The Oru is rigid and responsive in the water, and doesn't get tossed around easily. I've had to repair twice a teeny tiny leak that was a small nuisance but repair is holding well. Costing over a grand, the Oru Beach is very expensive compared to most other models tested for this review. Since none of the models have watertight bulkheads, there is no other way of keeping water out of the kayak. I know two other people who also have the Bay St and all of us have similar problems. Even with float bags and a very small paddler, after capsizing and reentering the kayak, it was so full of water that the cockpit rim was below the surface, making it impossible to pump out. With an adjustable footrest, backrest, and thigh braces, the Coast XT gives you amazing comfort and control. It can't quite compare to the performance of a 17' sea kayak with a rudder, but is one of the best kayaks of this size I've used and I have no qualms taking it anywhere I'd take a comparably sized and priced Necky for instance. In such little channels, it is a struggle to dump all the water out of that orange piece, which we could see creating a bit of a funky odor down the line especially if you like to paddle in some less-than-pristine waters and store your boat in a humid environment. The polypropylene material can sustain a lot of hard hits, and the makers guarantee that colliding against rocks wont damage your kayak. One of the worst companies I have ever dealt with in terms of responsiveness. Additionally, though this rigidity is greatly appreciated in many other aspects of usage, it does make it harder to stuff the Oru into small spaces like a narrow car trunk or through a small sedan door. Assembling it for the second time took me 10 - 15 minutes - next time probably 7 minutes or less. For me, it instantly rekindled a love of paddling and is worth every penny. While we appreciate its top-notch performance and superb construction, spending that much on a kayak may not be the easiest choice for everyone. While float bags are not mandatory or required by law, there is a very good reason that they are recommended with Oru Kayaks. The assembly was as easy as advertised. However, the designers suggest that you treat this rig the same as you would a fiberglass or skin-on-frame kayak. It is very important. It takes a maybe 30 minutes the first time you fold it into a boat, but after that can assemble it in less than 10 (mine has a particularly tough spot on the front fold that will get more flexible with more folds and reduce this time a bit). A clip at the end of the rope can attach to one of several points on or in the kayak. The freeboard is a little higher than my hard shell. In the month I've owned it, after shipping costs and converting to Canadian dollars, the boat has cost me about $120 per hour of use. It is a bit cumbersome to carry it on your shoulder and I wouldn't recommend anything super strenuous until the backpack comes out (sometime soon, I think). I sent a picture to the company and they said it apparently got cross threaded, presumably because it didn't go in straight. I used one time for 3 hours in water, plus 2 practices to assemble in home, one of the SEAM Channel is broken. I fashioned a rod holder (I designed it myself) that is secured under the X-shaped elastic bow strap. 2) IT FOLDS UP AND STORES EASILY! Just bought the basic Oru bay model.

I've done it all. It seems pretty quick too, possibly because it weighs half the weight of similar sized kayaks. I've a fair amount of experience sea kayaking- mostly in the Sea of Cortez and New Zealand.
