Mad Madame is beguiling and intense without being too extreme and if you can handle her she's waiting to take you on a sensual adventure. But I bit the proverbial bullet and sprayed some behind my knees, my safe spot for risky fragrances. My first impressions? Like some red wines, it was bitter, almost tannic to start off. With the castoreum note voted so highly on here and the tacky promo pictures with the furs, I was kind of afraid to try Mad Madame. This was walking into a broken down Art Deco greenhouse. Lutens' version is tarter, greener, a little more astringent, this is sweetened with amber and black currant and rounded out by leathery castoreum and warm tolu balsam. Its composition is a bit vintage, but not overly so. Mad Madame really packs a punch. It shocks you with that metallic icy rose at first -nope I was not afraid, I knew this was coming- and then it turns into that soapy, powdery but filthy patchouli rose monster with a whiff of currants. to my mind. The rose gives way to slight freesia and muskiness but is tempered by the softness of amber which keeps it from becoming too sharp and abrasive. Love at first sniff this is very good! got a sample from Sephora and sprayed myself. I often have to do this with aldehyde-heavy compositions such as this. Originally was surprised to find it nice and wearable despite the prominent beaver note; it wasn't as dirty as I expected. I get some jasmine without the indoles but I don't get any animal smells here, to my somewhat disappointment, being a fan of animalistic scents. Or it's a kind of olfactory whipcrack! It's cozy and a little dirty, kinda like sunday morning before you shower kinda like a sunday morning roll in the hay before you shower, when the bed is all warm and nice and they're all warm and nice and yeah. smelled nice but not for me. The rose, peony, patchouli, musk and amber makes this almost a dead ringer for Narciso Rodriguez Fleur Musc For Her, except, of course, for that barn yard fecal smell. To me it is a jasmine bomb. The drydown is dark, deep, and almost gothic with prominent rose and musk accords; it's still very bold but not as loud and sharp as the opening. Such a great intriguing perfume, sexy, floral with a musk. Something incredibly sexy I assume. It's still worth getting if you are into spicy sweet rose musk patchouli. Similar to original Eli Saab. In the vial Mad Madame smelled very sweet and litchi-like to me. Although the overall feel is very different, it does remind me of Ysatis. LOL, people! It's a strong, long lasting fragrance that can smell a bit too crazy if you use too much, but it can be a soft fragrance if you use it lightly. The madame must be mad--she doused herself in turpentine. It's a very witty perfume. I'm not sure what is causing that peppery effect, but it is at odds with the sweetness of the rose. Mad Madame might remind the wearer of Montale's Red Aoud but less the sting and complexity. Which I don't mind, it's just strange. After I spending my time reading all the reviews about Mad Madame, I have to admit, some of negative reviews had paused my blind-buy idea for this perfume. Clearly for my skin, castoreum does not translate to "warm", "animalic", or "leathery". This scent appears more trendy and youthful like a discovery while staying in hostels around the would. I have sampled this perfume 3 times, all under different circumstances, to better grasp its essence. I love it! I have skin that eats fragrances quickly and this one lasted several hours on me. I think they probably did not. It's a little different though, I get a little rusty metallic smell. I almost blind bought a bottle. I smelled a sharp and pungent rose which took me head over heels! It has a very particular scent nevertheless and that is in part, I think, for having amber in the opening, It smells very animalic, since the beginning, and while the jasmine opens opulently and then the base notes give it another very deep animal touch. first off i smell rose, some black currant and a strong musk and maybe some castoreum but not much, if any. The opening of this is actually very pretty, a mix of rose and what seems like a hint of green, but within 10 minutes this dries down and intensifies massively into the same rose and a very strong animalic note. Please dont let the casterom scare you off, this is blended so well and this perfume wouldn't be special or even warm without the casterom. This is an animalic, almost oily rose even almost sweat-laden rose. Amazing scent. tested it today. It smells of roses and ambergris, more "vintage" then "old lady.". This is a great scent for autumn/winter. The overall feel is "strong & sexy" a modern musky leather floral with a lot of rose & patchouli base. As a kid, my dad had a little toy we called the "stinkyman," a hollow rubber figure that wafted a smell when you squeezed it; I'm pretty sure that it must've been castoreum inside there.
