Thank you for your advice. I really like my TC Electronic Flashback mini with the EP3 TonePrint. And its not the same price so far. Sounds awesome on every youtube clipsuper warm and organic. Hoping to try the EHX Canyon soon. by Grey Sun Mar 19, 2017 8:27 am. Have you ever tried the Carl Martin Echotone? What do you think about the Skreddy echo, it sounds great me, do you think it would be good for early David Gilmour stuff like 60s and 70s era. That it had a true dry through signal? Back in the 1950-70s, analog meant huge machines that produced heavenly echo but required a lot of maintenance. @ Brad W. Thank you for making my decision to purchase the Nova a little easier. Many thanks ! Do you think it covers any gilmour tones? Im considering to buy the Way Huge Aqua Puss, it has a tonal influence that I really love, I think it will bring me in the vintage territory Im searchin. I think David has used dual delays for some time and I guess used one with fast repeats and another with slow repeats. The mix knob helps as does the ape age switch to give the sound as pristine a quality as you wish. a very simple question: Do you think that having both Catalinbread Echorec and Boss RE20 Space Echo could be redundant? I put my guitar directly connected to my fuzz face jhf1 and then the reptile 2. Gilmour tones: Wall Rattle, TC Electronics Flashback TC Electronics just announced the follow up of the Alter Ego, the . Now I havent tried it in a stereo setup used with another dry amp, but this thing sounds amazing! The El Capisatn has been on my wishlist for a while now, and is second-in-line of the Strymons after the Flint! Based on the reviews Ive seen and heard it seems like a great unity though. Im having such a hard time deciding between the el cap and boonar! All pedals, guitars, pickups and amps featured in the Buyers Guides are tested by me. It gives me hope for the future of music, and inspires me to see that it can be done a succesfull venture. by burpgun Sat Mar 18, 2017 3:10 pm, Post Its very lovely pedal. Bjorn]. The TC Flashback I guess. Davids first rig was very much inspired by Syd but also contemporary guitarists, like Jimi Hendrix and Hank Marvin. Not a big fan of digital delays, but the flashback its probably the best choice out there for digital delays I like to stack multiple analog delays, and they sound great, echo puss, supra puss are amazing the digitech obscure is pretty unique maybe for the more experimental minded players but hey Some here like to emulate Gilmour but not really imitate him I love his tones and I want to come as close as possible but also I like to take that and make my own music you can tell immediately Im influenced by Gilmour, but I also have sounds that are my own No brainier. Condolences to family and friends. This is great man! Ive never tried that combo but certainly use the Boonar and Echosex pedals a lot. Still, Ill try to run it in 18v as it tends to distort too fast with humbuckers, thanks bro! The zoom G2.1u isnt expensive and does the job well. Take care and thanks for all you do!!! Especially one that can be controlled with an expression pedal like that. You can actually achieve close to this sound without the expression pedal as there is a hold function on the time knob, so if you step and hold your foot down, it basically holds the repeats for as long as you want (but isn't as expressive/flexible as an expression pedal). Flanger/Chorus For example with the tape mode, on the original you could get the full 7 seconds of delay time and if using it as the basis of a tone print could manipulate certain parameters. I was wondering if the Walrus Audio Mako Series D1 is a good delay pedal for Gilmour tone? By the way i saw a video of yours, the review of the boonar and i hear the same things (the echo of the attack) when you go up in the fretboard in the time solo cover, i think that is the way that it should sound and is not a problem, i mix the repeats too loud (100% xD) Ill try lowering and get use to it. The Nova should do sound on sound with the spillover feature. http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/ng-interactive/2016/jul/14/david-gilmour-live-at-pompeii-a-photo-essay?CMP=twt_b-gdnnews#link_time=1468483402. I have a ibanez amp with transistors, not very good i guess, i use the clean channel and a moderate/high volume for a house, play too low is a bit boring. Ive been looking at the Boss DD-2, T-Rex Replica, Deluxe Memory Man/Boy reissues and the Strymon El Capistan, but if you have any suggestions outside of these pedals you are more than welcome to let me know. Great pedal! ByBuzz Technologies Big Muff (high end resistors and capacitors) What about some settings fo the Standard Memory Boy? Bypass: true bypass The Muff guide will be up sometime later this summer. Still, compared to the newer Boss DDs, I think the DD2 sound more natural and not nearly as sterile. The Repeater is a better pedal. Sounds really nice. Thanks, I havent tried it so I cant really tell but I would imagine it fits those tones perfectly :). In this feature well look at a handful of models and how to incorporate these in your rig, with David Gilmours tones in mind. Cheers and Thanks for the time and all the help all along these years. In some ways you could describe this as a 2-head tape machine delay, but with a little more control. Most slightly beefier delays should accommodate this - but they are probably all in the same price range of the El Capistan. Thanks for the advice! Anyway, how can you sell and promote a Echorec without at least acknowledging Pink Floyd? The Waza also has 800ms, the original had only 300ms. I am having difficulty choosing one. It did this weird thing where the sound would cut out when you tapped a tempo in and apparently that is normal :|. You are using an out of date browser. The Boonar is a faithful replication of the Binson Echorec 2, cramped into a MXR-sized chassis, packed with all the classic features. What do you think of the new waza craft delay? I would like to say aside from airbag and your solo stuff(I track lullabies in a car crash once a week on vinyl, just chill and get inspired), you could make a ton of money writing Pink Floyd tabs and doing video lessons to go along with them, like the obscure stuffIve yet to find a tab video/transcript of SHine on from delicate sound of thunder, or learning to fly. My main Delay-Unit is a TC-Electronic Flashback, sometimes i use a Line6 M5 for settings wich require an exact delay time, i. e. Run like hell. Im not sure but I think the Reptile is hardwire bypass. Does seem pricey, but it sounds pretty awesome to me. Jon. Most delay units does not have a display for setting accurate time settings. Can I get your thoughts on the strymon timeline. [Thank you, Emiliano! The Echorec had a much wider threshold of infinite repeats especially at slower speeds whereas the Boonar tended to get a whiny oscillation happening. IS it possible to play the intro of Time (slap back and longdelay) with only one delay like the TC Nova-1?? I couldnt be happier with the clarity and warmth of this delay. Davids tones can be divided in two. Hell, Mike from there even had me call him at home on a day off to talk for 20 minutes about setting up a pedal for my rig. Im finalizing my ASoS-WYWH board, and am looking for an Binson simulator pedal (or one close to it) to add to the board. And as always Bjorn, your hard work here is very much appreciated! Strymon of course is highly regarded for its various delay pedals, and this very authentic sounding tape delay is one of its most loved. Hey Bjorn, have you had the time to spend some time with the Maxon AD999 yet? Tap tempo: yes If you havent tried it yourself, Ill let you know how it sounds! Oh I think theyre all overlapping to some extent. But I was thinking of putting a second pedal on for longer and cleaner delays. At that price, it may be worth the chance. Im looking for a delay pedal and I need your advice please. Both are very good so I recommend that you check out some reviews and decide :). Between the TC Flashback 2 or x4 and the EHX Canyon Delay and Grand Canyon Delay, which would be better for recreating the sounds from the ASoS Animals era? (Im not really looking for many kinds of delay, just a good one that sounds like tape would be great IMO) Cheers, and thank you for the fast response, [Its based on the old Echoplex. The red Pig Hoof is in most cases better suited for live playing. Please tell me what you think Thorpy's Hugely Accomplished and Wide-Ranging Scarlet Tunic Preamp is his most Instantly Gratifying Overdrive to-date! Theyre sturdy and the Flashback, in all its variations, is hard to beat. I have tried to reproduce that without success. I will be using a Blackface Fender Princeton with 12 speaker. Dont think you can beat the TC Flashback in that price range. The last mentioned is a little large and has a very limited feature set for its size, but does sound suitably lush. Hi Bjorn, I was reading in the Kit Rae page about the parallel delay setup used by Gilmour, sending separate 100% wet and dry signals to a blender or mixer. Hard to tell whether Davidstill using one out of habit or if it sounds good (well, I assume it does but you know). However, I tend to find the Replica more natural and warm sounding with distortion. Ive never seen Phil Taylor disparaging anything. Thanks again for all your great work and illuminating insights. Post I used the 2290 mode with the delay time at about 1 oclock for aprox 750ms, the feedback at 12:00 and the level at 11:00. However, they did use it for echo on vocals during the tours in the 70s. Im about to order, and cant decide. I really appreciate your comment. Not a hater, but do not understand the hype at all. Whats more, the Toneprint parameters have changed for all the modes, so for example you cant take the 2290 mode and make it sound like tape by increasing modulation and saturation. In the late 70s, David swapped his old Binson with more reliable digital units. Thats strange. One of the main reasons I swapped it for the Belle. Im tossing up between the Boss DD-2 (if I can find one) and the T-Rex Replica. The HF2 seems to have some features I want but dont want to lose Gilmourish sound either. Havent tried it, so I cant really tell. Are digital delays not Too thin .? Sorry for being repetitive, but i know both are really great pedals and Im not sure about which one get. None of these does the Binson but rather a Binson-ish tone when the Binson is set for a single head repeat. -Level, 2:30 approximately Sorry for another question but I was wondering would I be better off getting a Boss DD-2 for digital delay and an analog delay pedal or just an Eventide Timefactor for both? Just got me the El Capistan and I wanderd if you can share your favorit settings for that one. My question is: what model MXR Delay did Gilmour use, and more importantly, what do you think gets closest today? Check out Davids signal path here. RE-201 send the input to both in parallel but the feedback the output of both into the 2nd head only. can I ask You, in youre opinion, is better tc flashback o boss dd2 for gilmour sound? Im interested in actuall tape echoes and there use in a gilmour type rig. If youre on a budget I highly recommend the Tone City Tape Machine. Ive been changing my gear, so I still havent bought the Belle Epoch (I hope that thay comes soon), but, for the moment I think I need a cheap delay. by redchapterjubilee Sun Mar 19, 2017 7:16 am, Post Great quality and not terribly expensive for a handwired boutique pedal- Might be worth a look if you ever get around to it. Looking forward to hearing from you about the Valente pedal too! Ill see what I can do for future updates :). This followed on from an unanswered email regarding the manual. now I want a strat too . Between strymon el capistain and boonar dawner in youre opinion whats more versatile? Im trying to get something like Gilmours tone from the 70s (DSOTM, Aninals, WYWH especially). Do you have any recommended settings, in general? Both seem good (and theyd better for the price) but Im leaning towards the Eventide because I saw that you can download the presets that the guitarist from Roger Waters The Wall created and they sound pretty close to Gilmours original tones. Would you prefer it over a Carbon Copy? I remember it had some lovely vintage sounds and a lot of controls :), Hey just wanted to ask why there seems to be such a strong bias towards the boonar vs the caitlenbread? (DIY) Big Muff using parts from end 60s/early 70s, Some interesting stuff: With those two pedals I can float a tone in the background of my acoustic playing through a stereo rig that you dont notice until you go looking for it. See the budget gear guide for some tips. I have the Obscura and an El Capistan and currently the El Cap is on the board but I thought the Obscura compared very favorably in terms of typical tape delay sounds. Do you have any experience or insight about the Skreddy Echo pedal? Cheers, Catalinbread makes some amazing stuff and Im sure they get a lot of mails and requests but either you dont answer at all or you take your customers seriously. (just not to pricey) I am in the market for a delay pedal and am stumped looking for help. Much like with the Empress Tremolo, I feel that there are other delays pedals here slightly better appointed overall in this area. Have you ever heard anything about that yourself or do you happen to know whether they might have used any such units either live or in the studio at some stage? 9 of the Best Chase Bliss Audio Pedals - A Full House at last! Have you tried one of them? You have to enable the tap feature using the PC Toneprint editor (not the app) and connect the footswitch into the R stereo input using a TRS plug, with the switch between ring and sleeve. Have you seen the review of the new TC Alter Ego X4 from PGS? I own an original RE-201, which is a bit like my pride and joy, and I regularly check out forums for advice on maintenance and stuff. Last but not least, it comes at a more reasonable price (at least here in Norway) than the Replica and Nova Delay etc. Hi Brian! Both are capable of replicating classic delays and also more modern studio quality stuff. Either the standard or the mini. Thank you again Keith M. [Not sure. It also depends on what kind of delay youre using. It displays the settings, which I miss on my I think of the el cap as more of a punctual/stand out sort of sound. Cheers, Jonathas. do you have more reviews in mind? Bjorn That seems to have a top quality analog delay emulation, as well as a huge variety of digital options. Is there a difference in tone between tape mode on strymon timeline and El capistan? Ive written a feature about reverb that I recommend checking out, The HOF is great and with the toneprint feature you can pretty much create any tone you need. I didn't know that was a thing until I tried it with the Carbon Copy Deluxe. :). I am very happy with Analogman dual analog delay ardx20 with amaze0 control box and the digital Providence chrono delay (was very happy to see it in Davids studio set-up). I actually got into a discussion with the builder on a forum- he argued that since only the delay line is digital and the rest of the signal path is analog, it wasnt misleading to claim a fully analog signal path. What do you think about EHX #1 Echo for some Gilmour tones? thanks again for the help. This is a wonderful combination of delay and reverb, obviously based on the earlier Echorec and Echoplex technologies with some refinements and advances along the way. Do you have any feedback on this Delay pedal? A good start, for covering the tones you mention, would be at least one overdrive for rhythms, distortion/fuzz for leads and a delay. This really is a great pedal, thanks for the advice Bjorn. Im just a Newbie whos discovered more than I ever expected to find with these analog devices. Theyre a business and their foremost job is to make money. Im on a pretty tight budget, so what would be a good, versatile delay for around $100? But, dont hold me responsible for any choice you make :) Bjorn]. Catlinbreads Adineko is also great for a darker atmosphere and is a beast in its own personality but you wont get Gilmour out of it. Im not sure if this question was already asked and if Ill be able to make myself clear. I think it could be more advantage but as long as it is analog sounding. As I live in India, pedals are quite expensive. I dont need an all in one pedal just a digital delay. I was thinking maybe the Careful With That Axe Eugene volume swell technique, with lots of echo and maybe the Electric Mistress? One of the best sounding tape delays Ive ever played through. Do you know a place I can go to get a few good presets for my nova delay? Analog delay, are darker, often with a slightly distorted decay. The Replica is very similar to the Memory Man, which I think pretty much set the standard for analog delay pedals. Tap tempo: yes But I was really going for a more authentic tape emulation so I kept the Skrecho and El Cap. There have been 3 legendary analogue tape-style delay engines that everyone agrees on: All those 3 have a significant influence and impact on many if not most of those featured here - which are either direct simulations of those former classics, or pay some sort of lip-service to them. Like all of EHXs 70s line, the DMM has its flaws, with noise issues and volume drop, but this thing sounds beautiful and super organic. Hi Bjorn, Im sorry to have asked a stupid question! http://stinkfoot.se/archives/516 Some revisions came about after that though. I really like the Dunlop Echoplex delay pedal. Some recordable and recallable presets by footswich. Thanks for the reply. I would also like to add that David Gilmour likes to set his delay timing with the beat of the song along with your explanation. Thank you, really, youve been such a help with random peoples gear Bjorn I would love an El Cap, but a used one is about 100 bucks more than a Belle Epoch or an Echoplex delay, and I don't need half of what the El Cap does. have you been able to try out the new version of the MWR Carbon Copy Bright? The DD3 is digital and has a brighter more pristine tone. Bjorn], Ive been hearing demos of the echorec and the belle epoch. by StevenO Sat Mar 18, 2017 5:37 pm, Post Thank you so much ! I said that would be like saying that, since only the patty is meat and the rest of it is grains and veggies, its not misleading to call a hamburger vegetarian. It becomes a tad more mids/muddier which is a shame because I want to combine both pedals. Powered by Invision Community, I'm certainly not an El Capistan hater - I think it's a solid pedal - but if you're looking for alternatives, the first one that comes to mind is the, the el cap sounds fine but its very boring. David usually set his delays with 6-7 repeats and moderate level (about 3 oclock) and the time depends on the song. Seems to be a cost-effective alternative to the Strymon Timeline weighted more toward DGs more digital delay-based 80s/90s/present tones than earlier, analog tones. It is just a beautiful sounding analog delay. The only thing that dulls it down a bit is turning it to a clean sound, which is no fun. Greetings from Malta. When I play in my small bedroom I really feel a lack of ambience. The Boonar is a different pedal, with a very different tone. Bjorn], Ill throw in my two cents about Catalinbread, yes they make a couple of good pedals, but some absolute crap too,( see The Depths! From Saucerful of Secrets (1968) to Wish You Were Here (1975) you want an analog unit or at least a good digital tape/analog sim for those warm and organic sounding repeats. Juan, I have the Faux Tape Echo and its fantastic. Ive just read this thread and if only I had seen it before I would have made savings! Its basically a Nova, stripped for all the extras and cramped into a much smaller footprint. Hope your album recording goes nice, [Oh I wasntt aware. Especially when they dont want to send a pedal, which I always keep since I dont make any money from this. Also setting up two delays in series one with double time of the other one helps stretch the tail at low delay volume that keeps repeats of attacks less audible. Hi! @ Bjorn: Thanks for the great work you are doing here! With my stereo rig I really benefit from stereo signal processing for delay and reverb - all of these throw up all manner of quandaries about signal-chain placement etc. So it's more like the Echoplex and Replicator in its style of tape delay. Bryan. Hey Bjorn, awesome insight into the world of Pink Floyd. They do sound different though. and if I buy an american vintage deluxe can I change the plug easily enough to operate in british voltage? Gilmour tones: ASoS Rattle, Boss DD-20 Its got most of the features found on the old Echorec 2 and you can nail pretty much all of Davids early 70s echo tones with it. Anyone have any experience with the Prophet Delay from TC? And how much Speed and Depth for the flanger? echo 6, repeat 7, level 9 (unity gain) and tempo 6. All of Brian Wampler's pedals sound excellent and have great picking dynamics, and of the various tape delays featured here - this one sits kind of between the Keeley Magnetic Echo, Empress Tape Delay and the Strymon El Capistan. Its based on the delay section of his Dark Side pedal, but with some modulation added. Id been looking at the Catalinabread Echorec online, but since they dont value it highly enough themselves to put it up against the other pedals reviewed here, I guess thats one Im not interested in either So of someone's looking for that sound, it'd be worth it. In all ways mate! Regarding long tail without hearing repeats I found it is partially created by the effect of reducing the attack and beefing up the tone body by using compressor and overdrive as well. How do you compare the JHS Lucky Cat to Flashback in term of timbre? It was as if they didnt decay in a very percussive way. It is the real Rolls Royce, but how can we evaluate its gilmourish features? I think Ill try to find that 300ms setting and play with the repeats to get a full sounding tone. Im honestly considering take a programable delay for the same price like Flashback as for example the Nova Delay. Theres a part two there also. Hi Bjorn, I own the Catalinbread Echorec, and Im wondering, if the Carbon Copy could do anything more for me? The true original here - the Binson Echorec seems to be the most copied version with Catalinbread, Dawner Prince and Gurus all having their versions of that. I have now tried for a while the TRex Reptile 2 and I think the warm sound and delay of this pedal are excellent. Thanks a lot for all the help you give in this site! I've never owned a Strymon but I will never sell my Skrecho. I promise Ill make a donation! The tube echo's warble is pretty spot on to my echoplex, more so than the El Cap even. Why go through the hassle? I regularly visit your website to make pruchasing decisions on everything Gilmour-related. Lots of great info and shopping tips. I was interested in your suggestions for the Electro Harmonix small green muff, and maybe a Jetter vibe? Noise level: 10/10 Hi Bjorn, I was hoping you could recommend me a delay pedal that does a great job replicating gilmours digital delay sound like on time, budget aside. With more presets and if possible smaller in size? Tap tempo: no The Triple is, as the name implies, three delays in one, allowing different patches and settings or all together at once. Im usually using either the 2290 or tape modes. Would you recommend the Jam Pedals Delay Llama or Strymon El Capistan for Gilmour tones? Bjorn]. So I'm a 98% El Cap guy. Thank you for ALL of this work! It has some cool features on it as seen on many videos.. cheers. :), Haha, dont worry, its just like for the kind of sounds you prefer to make with delay.. Have you ever felt the need of tap tempo for gigs? I listened comparisons with the T-Rex Replica and Reptile 2, and they seems quite similar for me (except for the flutter part of the Reptile, of course). Again! I didnt like how modulation on the Boonar was tied in with the loss of high end in the drum age control; whereas the Echorec has a dedicated modulation control but inside the pedal which was a hassle as I found the desire to tweak it a lot. A current favourite of mine is the FX Amplification Heartbeat, which is very similar to the Memory Man and Replica. -Feedback, just a hair off 12:00 to the left side Same question with MXR digital delay.is there a matching setting on the TC flashback? Too much, and the delays will be all over the place. Delay is tricky because how it sounds, depends on the combination of how youve set the amp, what pedals you use with it and, obviously, how youve set the delay.
