It might be best to drop this model and allow students to focus on one skill at a time: that is, strive for maximum realism in the interpreting exercises and practise sight-translation separately. Roughly put, this can certainly be understood as distinct from simultaneous interpreting (but not necessarily from chuchotage) and can justifiably be seen as different to interpreting in the contexts of conferences, business, and the courts.
