Schuylers Afrofuturist novel set during the Harlem Renaissance, is the story of Max Disher (Brandon Victor Dixon), a young man eager to try the mysterious machine invented by Dr. Junius Crookman (Tariq Trotter) that guarantees to solve the American race problem by turning Black people white. LUNDEN: So the challenge for the creative team, especially the writers, was to move the story from broad satire to something with a beating heart, says director Scott Elliott. LUNDEN: The central character Max is a man about town in Harlem. LUNDEN: Brandon Victor Dixon plays the conflicted Max. When the second act opens with the shows umpteenth variation of the tired Youre probably wondering how I got here record-scratch, its tempting to yell back, like at a horror movie.. I'm very proud of that moment. Unlike Peeles race-relations masterpiece, fraught with tension and informed by centuries of aggressions, micro and macro, Black No More has absolutely nothing new to say about its themes.
